Lucy, an 8-year old Golden Retriever/Chow mix is desperately looking for a "soft place to fall" - might you be the one?

Well, it's a day to rejoice! Our adoptable pets are now on petfinder.com! Petfinder will further list them on partner sites so we are hopeful that we will be able to find more pets permanent homes! If you would like to see our "stars", please go to

or copy and paste this address into your browser window.

All of these efforts to advertise, publicize, and show up at public events are designed to prevent having to euthanize animals because we are running out of kennel space! Our volunteers work tirelessly every day of every week to find homes for the animals at Spring River Animal Services.

As I have stated in a previous blog - we are not a no-kill shelter and if the truth was known, neither are the no-kill shelters. They, too face the reality of ending the life of a suffering animal and they end up relinquishing unadoptable ones to other shelters where their fate is unknown.

Euthanasia evokes a lot of emotions and anger from many of our citizens and volunteers but it is something we have to live with and bear until way too many pet owners in our communities become more responsible and will have their pets spayed and neutered in the future!

We were swamped with calls in recent weeks of people claiming "this cat just showed up or was dumped on my property and she has a litter of kittens" or similar explanations. Often, the cat belongs to the person calling and they're trying to take the easy way out instead of having the animal altered. Hence, they make their problem our problem! The same calls come in about "someone just dumped these puppies in my yard" - the stories are very interesting, I promise you!

Let me reiterate here that abandoning or "dumping" animals is punishable by law in the State of Arkansas and will cost much more than a spay or neuter at the vet clinic!

Let's all be more proactive and have a chat with relatives or friends and neighbors who let the indiscriminate breeding go on year after year, contributing to the number of "strays" and homeless animals in our region.

ON THAT NOTE, PLEASE CALL MARTHA WILLIAMS AT 870-710-3056 TO GET PETS SPAYED AND NEUTERED AT THE OLD EVENING SHADE HIGHSCHOOL ON JULY 14TH AND 15TH - OR, IF THEY ARE BOOKED UP, PLEASE PLAN ON BRINGING THEM TO OUR FACILITY IN SEPTEMBER FOR THE LOW COST SPAY AND NEUTER CLINIC. WE WILL ANNOUNCE THIS EVENT IN LOCAL PUBLICATIONS AND ON THIS WEBSITE AS SOON AS THE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AND CONFIRMED.
