Racing and baseball

Posted Sunday, July 12, 2009, at 12:02 PM

This week was a busy one and I had a lot on my plate, but getting it done means a lot to blog about.

Someone has to do these things and it's a lot more people than me. It seems that there is something for everyone to do for others and there is satisfaction in doing things for others benefits.

This week I was sworn in as the West Plains Lions Club Vice President, and with that comes the hours of afterhours work that results in people with vision needs being cared for and mostly children. The other side is the fund raising, it's about people and anyone that knows me, KNOWS, that I'm a real people person. Working in a booth at the fair selling funnel cakes, helping local businesses expose their wares at the Outdoor Adventures Sportshow, or establishing competitions for young and old alike to meet their personal goals, proves that serving absolutely generates blessings, which makes it worth the investment of the time.

Well baseball for me is always my grandsons and various other nephews, nieces, granddaughter, and cousins. In one week alone my grandsons had 3 practices and 8 games in 5 different locations and 3 towns. It did go quite well for them too. If it wasn't so far away and more timely, I could watch my granddaughter at horse shows. They are always when I'm at work at the speedway, but I do catch some.

The racing was once again competitive and garnered excitement from the crowd. The thunder storms on Saturday kept the staff on their toes, but all events ran with a slight delay on the starting time. For the third week in a row there was a different winner in the Modified class and Carl Murphy of Caulfield won his first ever race, and not just modified, but in a race car. In the super stock it was the first win of the season for the all time WPMS winner Stan Ellison. The track was sticky and made it double fast, which the fans loved. It was the Frost Family night and they always key their activities on the Youth and it makes it lots of fun for everyone. The Hobby and Youth Hobby races were won by Dakota Frost and his dad Dexter, who came from dead last to win the feature in the final 2 laps. There was already a terrific race in the front with previous winners, John Stiner and Kevin Collins. While they were battling for the bottom line Frost would sneak around them on the high side for a very exciting finish. We also had a very inspiring rendition of the National Anthem by the Frost Family Singers, that gave everybody goose bumps. I personally want to thank the Frost Family for a great evening. One the way home to Salem I was dodging debris, hail, and timing my passage with reported tornados and thunderstorms.

There will be no races the weekend of the 18th, but will resume on the 25th. So I'll go fishing on Friday night and a Horseshow on Saturday night. By the way, Friday night will be after the Baseball games at Bakersfield.

Remember if you are not serving other people, you are missing real BLESSINGS.
