Charges filed in area post office break-ins (12/30/08)
Jimmy Hooper, 29, and his wife Christa Hooper, 23, of Batesville are facing federal charges after police investigations led to their arrest for breaking into several area post offices. Among the post offices the two are believed to have broken into are Ash Flat, Evening Shade and Glencoe. A one car accident in Independence County Dec. 21 resulted in the death of a Cherokee Village man. According to the Arkansas State Police report, Sean A. Baldridge, 19, of Cherokee Village was driving a 1997 Chevy Blazer north bound on Highway 167 South of Cave City when he crossed the center line of the highway. The vehicle went over the left shoulder hitting an embankment causing it to overturn. Baldridge was pronounced dead at the scene...

Some are blaming recent local thefts on the economic recession. Fulton, Sharp and Izard counties have all had businesses broken into in the past month. Horseshoe Lanes in Horseshoe Bend was broken into Oct. 27 and just over a month later the Snappy Mart in Horseshoe Bend was burglarized. Fire destroys auction barn (12/26/08)
The Hardy Auction Barn located on West Front Street in Hardy has seen the last of its glory days. The building, that according to Fire Chief Ernie Rose, has been standing since he moved to the area in the 1960s was destroyed by fire Dec. 15. According to the report, Rose, who is also the Police Chief of Hardy, was patrolling when he noticed smoke coming from the canopy that was connected to the building.
