A Smithville man is in the Sharp County Jail after a state trooper found him in possession of drugs during a routine traffic stop June 25.

Ronald Dean Mobley, 51, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, a class C felony; use or possession with the intent to use drug paraphernalia, a class C felony; simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, a class Y felony. He is also charged with no vehicle license and no liability insurance, both class A misdemeanors.

On June 25 Trooper Jeremy Connor of the Arkansas State Police noticed a blue 1970 Ford pickup without a license plate traveling near Calamine on Highway 115, according to an affidavit prepared by Special Agent Wendall Jines of the Arkansas State Police. Connor stopped the pickup.

Connor approached the driver, Mobley, who was nervous, the affidavit said. Connor then noticed a pistol on the seat beside Mobley, the document said.

When Mobley got out of the vehicle at Connor's request, Connor noticed two firearms in plain view -- an SKS assault rifle and a .22-caliber pistol, Jines wrote. Both were loaded, the document said.

Connor searched Mobley and had him empty his pockets and put the contents on the hood of his pickup. One of the items Mobley pulled out of his pocket was a metal pipe known to be used to inhale methamphetamine, the affidavit said. Mobley then pulled out a film container and told Connor it held methamphetamine, Jines wrote.

When Connor opened the container he found a plastic bag with approximately 3.5 grams of methamphetamine, the affidavit said.

Mobley was arrested and transported to the Sharp County Jail. He was later interviewed by Jines. He told Jines he had been using methamphetamine for eight to 10 years, the document said.
